Viral Loops Product Update: What’s New From October

Hey everyone, 👋

Yes, this is what you think it is. 😉

It's important to know what's going on with Viral Loops and give us your feedback.

So, like we did in the past, we will announce, once or twice a month, new features, major improvements and also minor bug fixes and UI improvements.

So, here's what's new for this month:

😱 Viral Loops Pages

What’s this?

A ready-made landing page that hosts your Viral Loops campaign that you can use if you cannot edit your website (or if you don’t have one!).

What else can it do?

You can test your campaign and see how it works and how the widgets look, before touching anything on your website.

How do I use it?

Just go to the Installation step of the Campaign Wizard and customise your Viral Loops Page. If, at any moment, you want to install the campaign on your website, just follow the instructions for your platform. The Viral Loops Page works in parallel and won’t affect your installation.

But I want it to be in my domain!

No problem, you can use your own domain for the Viral Loops Page.

⚙️ Branding options & white label settings

You can now select how you want the Viral Loops link (with <3 from Viral Loops) to appear on your campaign widgets and emails.

Furthermore, if the user is on the Power plan they can enable the white label option (no VL attribution).

💌  New email templates

We completely redesigned the email templates that you can use for your campaign.

Our main goal was to make it super lean and good looking. ❤️

Here's how it looks in one of our customers 👇

You Want More? ⭐️

1.You can now change your password.

Go to your settings from the drop-down menu on the top right corner of the screen and click Change” on the Password field under Account Info”.

2. Add your own outbound email address

The emails sent from your Viral Loops campaigns are normally sent from However, you might want to use your own own email domain to send these messages and now you can!

3. Many more bug fixes and improvements.

That's all from us. 💪

Good times ahead!

Viral Loops joins forces with Growth Tribe

Today some of our team members are doing their happy dance! 🎉

Wondering why?

We dance regularly for no reason, but today there is one! 🤗

"We’ve partnered with Growth Tribe, Europe’s first growth hacking academy and wanted to let you know about it."

Growth Tribe offers a 3-month growth hacking academy as well as crash marketing courses and workshops. If you’re interested in learning more about them, you can take a look at

Some of their partners include Facebook, University of Amsterdam, Philips and Catawiki, a Dutch startup that has raised $82 million in Series C. 😱

After using several platforms, they finally chose Viral Loops for teaching viral and referral marketing to the growth hackers participating in the academy.

This is a great milestone for us, as it shows that our approach of building an easy to use product with ready-made templates inspired by some of the best viral and referral programs, like the ones inspired by Dropbox and Airbnb, is what our customers need.

They don’t want yet another referral marketing platform, but rather a product that helps them build campaigns that work for their business.

As Jim Groenen, Lead Growth Hacker at Growth Tribe, puts it:

“At Growth Tribe we found that Viral Loops is one of the easiest tools to implement a referral program. We train Growth Teams to setup their campaigns in just 30 minutes. Viral Loops is awesome, especially since it has a super diversified stack of campaign templates. Our course participants are now able to build almost any viral campaign they want!”

We truly believe that by making such great partnerships, Viral Loops will help more startups and small companies acquire more customers and users effectively.

So, we won’t stop here. 😎

More news and partnerships are coming soon! 💪🏼

If you liked what you’ve just read, just share 💜 to help us keep it up 🙂

We’d love to get your feedback, so feel free to leave a response below.

Your Brand + Viral Loops = A Match Made In Heaven

We recently delivered two new features in Viral Loops allowing you to create campaigns with looks that totally match your brand.

When running a marketing campaign, you are looking to increase awareness about your brand and product.

Understandably, this can only happen if the tool you are using allows you to create unique materials for the campaign that can take your message across in your own particular way.

This was a requested feature for Viral Loops since the day we launchedand I am proud to say we finally got it through the door.

Part 1: A better customization of the campaign widgets

Part one of our upgrades is that you can now select the colours you want to use in the popup and the leaderboard of the campaign. That means they can fit in your website in a much nicer way than before. You can choose a primary colour for the popup and a colour for the button.

Here’s how it would look if Airbnb was using Viral Loops. They’re not using it (yet!).

The Leaderboard looks great too!

Part 2: Emails that speak your language

Part two and the most exciting one is that you can now fully customize all the emails that your audience will receive as part of your campaign.

That's a welcome email for a (hypothetical) campaign of Airbnb.

You can upload your own header image (or logo), change the content of the email, the colour and text of the call-to-action etc. You can make it your own.

Try it yourself!

There are huge benefits to having a fully customizable campaign and our clients are already noticing increasing conversion rates in the different stages of the campaign.

Through the campaign wizard you can now do all these customizations and it’s seriously easy.

Just go to Viral Loops (sign up if you haven’t done so already!) and edit your campaign (or create a new one). You will find all the options right there in your Campaign Wizard.

Our effort to allow you to create a fully customizable campaign only begins with these two upgrades and we will definitely release more options anytime soon!

Which makes me ask… what options would you like to have available when creating your campaign in Viral Loops? Reply to let me know!

Why we decided to build Viral Loops in public

“The only way to win is to learn faster than anyone else.” — Eric Ries

Believe us Eric, we’re trying. 🤓

The Idea

We’re a team of 7.

We officially launched Viral Loops last month. For those haven’t heard it, Viral Loops is an all-in-one viral and referral marketing platform.

The last couple of weeks we’re working on a new feature and after 2 sprints and a lot of brainstorming, we came up with some user stories. So, we designed the basic user flow in the app.

Next steps? Create some functional mockups, design and develop the feature.

But when do we get user feedback? Did we forget our users? The point is, that we’re trying to make an idea into something real without knowing the reality.

Believe me, you don’t want to end up with this.

The real goal here is to learn faster than others. Only your users will help you achieve this. It’s like a “we’re in this together” thing. Pure love ❤️

We’ve been inspired by the transparency of Buffer, Product Hunt and Crew. They write about how it is to run a company from nothing, fail, get up and start again. In any case, it’s a dose of motivation for many entrepreneurs.

That’s why we decided to take the leap and build Viral Loops in public. 💪

Build in Public 1.0

“ Meaningful growth is something beyond tactics, growth is a mindset applied to your product which helps your customers get happy.

By getting people involved in your development process, you become more transparent and approachable. Give people the opportunity to see what you’re making while you’re making it. This empowers your company with the great sense of “help me build this for you.”

That’s what we’re going to do, but we’ll start with baby steps. We’re opening our development process for new features to our users and subscribers.

Here’s how it’ll look like:

Yes, most probably we’ll change this a bit. But the idea is to let users get a feeling of what’s coming up and get their input early on.

How are we going to do this? Each time we’re in the process of building something new, we’ll try to get feedback in every single step and engage our community. So, we’ll follow the 4 steps below:

  1. We’ll create some mockups and upload them to InVision. The design doesn’t have to be perfect or complete. Just something to show and kickstart the conversation.
  2. Now it’s time for feedback. Good or bad we want it all. We’ll share it with our customers and the rest of the community.
  3. We’ll take advantage of that feedback. The challenge here is to choose wisely what to listen to and what to ignore. Because as Henry Ford said“If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses.” This will help us build a beta version. At the end of this step, we’ll send it to users and subscribers, and let them test it out. 🐒
  4. Now, for the final step, we’ll have to do the necessary revisions and ship the final version. We’re going to have a “Product Announcement” series, here in Medium.

Benefits of Building in Public

The benefits of providing a sneak peak and involving users in the development process, are:

1.Early Feedback

One of the best ways to evaluate your ideas is to get feedback early on. Feedback, ideally in the early stage of the design, results in a better product and less waste. This means more happy customers 😊

2.Excitement & Word Of Mouth!

We love sneak peaks. People get excited when they see the “behind the scenes” work of a startup. This can also bring more word of mouth for your company, because you make them feel like insiders.

Jonah Burger, marketing professor at the Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, mentions at his bestselling book, “Contagious: Why Things Catch On” that this type of social currency can drive word of mouth for your product.

By letting people contribute actively to your product and telling you what they like and what they don’t, you make them feel owners of the product they use. And you also build a great community.

“ Without community support, it’s virtually impossible to create traction.” — Tony Conrad says at Product Hunt.

Inevitably, this increases engagement and loyalty, which leads to betterretention. And we all know what good retention means for a startup.

In his book, Hooked: How to Build Habit-Forming Products, author Nir Eyal, writes,

“Many innovations fail because consumers irrationally overvalue the old while companies irrationally overvalue the new.” So when you release a new product for consumers, you have to be at least nine times better than the previous alternatives in order to have a chance to get users switching from the old product they were using to your product.”

And this is just the beginning

This is only the beginning of building Viral Loops in public. We’re gradually going to uncover more aspects of our company, and not just the product development process.

We strongly believe that if you put something that’s helpful out into the world — something even better will happen at some point. But even bigger than that, you might inspire someone to make an even greater positive impact or just build something really cool.

Liked it? Just share ❤ to let us know 🙂

We’d love to get your feedback and share your experience if you’ve done this in the past. We haven’t built in public in the past, so feel free to leave a response.

What Everyone Needs To Know About Awesome Support

 “Hello, this is awesome support”

Startup-ing is hard. You have A LOT to do. Especially in a small team. And when you have set the bar really high, like we have done in Viral Loops, the amount of fronts that you are fighting at the same time is simply never ending.

But being there when a startup makes its first steps means you get to do things the way you want to do them.

At Viral Loops we are big supporters of stealing like artists. We stand on the shoulders of giants, there’s no denying. Buffer, MailChimp, Intercom, Help Scout, Sharetribe. We admire their products, their teams and their culture and so, inevitably, not only our product but our own culture has also been greatly influenced by them.

Which is why in Viral Loops we wanted to provide amazing support from Day 1, like these companies do. Did someone just ask what amazing support means to us? Well, I’ll assume you did and just go ahead and tell you all about it. Stay with me.

“If you want to see the true measure of a team, watch how they treat those who haven’t added their credit card yet”. Anonymous PM

Awesome Support?

Now, there’s a lot of ways you can frame awesome support. Incredibly fast, always available etc. easily come to mind. While speed is our thing, we haven’t set targets for that yet (like Buffer did). And while you will most likely get a quick response if you contact us any crazy time during the day (or the night), we cannot promise our answer won’t come with a small delay.

Because let’s be honest, we’re a small team juggling a huge amount of tasks with meraki and avoiding any compromises in quality. So, if replying to emails while in bed isn’t our thing, what is it then that makes our support so f*cking special we’re writing a blog post about it?

Viral marketing is a strange beast. Growth hacking is even stranger. When building Viral Loops, we envision a platform that empowers businesses and individuals to grow their audiences, their user base, to raise awareness about their brand, all in an easy to use package that provides enjoyable UX (think MailChimp) and quick solutions.

To use a great tool is not enough. In order to succeed, viral marketing campaigns need proper nurturing.

But there’s no denying it, to use a great tool (Viral Loops) is not enough. In order to succeed, viral marketing campaigns need proper nurturing. You can’t just put them up and expect leads to flock to your campaign.

You need to promote your campaign, find the right audiences, create a nice landing page, find messages that convert and so much more.

And let’s not forget that the campaigns people create in Viral Loops are only just one part of their marketing efforts which may well extend in several other areas, online or offline.

Which is where we come in.

Viral Loops was born in a growth team. Our founders have been doing growth before it was cool and all of us are fascinated by growth problems. This is what we read about, what we think about. We are a group of people who first think as growth hackers, regardless of everything else that we do in this team.

Therefore, when any of our early-access users (from our pre-launch campaign, which you should join here) gets in touch with questions or feedback regarding Viral Loops, we instinctively put ourselves in their shoes. We try to understand their business and their goals and offer suggestions for helping them achieve those goals.

And that’s how we arrived to our definition of awesome support:

Awesome Support = Enable + Boost

Awesome support should be an enabler. You cannot control the way people will use your product. Some times it won’t work for them the way you wanted to, other times they might need something you haven’t thought of because their use case is more peculiar than you thought when you were designing it.

Supporting them in those cases is super important. No one needs another complication in their lives and a friendly contact with your team that can ensure them their needs are understood (even if they can’t be covered) is great comfort.

As we mentioned earlier, tools can only do so much. The rest is what you do with them and how you support your marketing efforts. There’s no point in creating an amazing Facebook ad that converts very well if your landing page is a leaky funnel. The great copy your wrote for your campaign won’t be seen if no-one can find the call-to-actions.

And I’m not talking only about supporting you for campaigns you have created on Viral Loops. Perhaps your product is suffering in some other way. Just tell us about it.

Over time we have advised our users (but also visitors of our website who just contacted us) by providing ideas for all steps of their funnels, from increasing acquisition to improving their CTRs to finding people to build a growth team.

Don’t take our word for it, Marcus Karoumi from 100 Snapchat Marketing Hacks had some nice things to say about our support process:

“I have used other platforms in the past but they were too ugly and expensive but this is on another level. Love the design of everything and how easy it feels. The team of Viral Loops provided me with great ideas for bootstraping my campaign and getting traction from the start!”

That’s what he said!

Our users’ users

Another aspect of our culture is that we should care not only for our users but also for our users’ users. Which is yet another reason why we should strive to be the company and the product with which businesses and individuals can create amazing viral marketing campaigns that are meaningful and valuable for their audiences.

Ending on a high note

Our friends and colleagues think we’re crazy. They ask us: does this scale? In all honestly, we don’t think so. But, at the same time, our reply to them is… “challenge accepted”.

The point is, as was very nicely articulated by Belle Beth Cooper on the blog of Buffer:

People don’t buy products, they buy better versions of themselves

Which means that you can’t just be the product. You have to help your users succeed. And surely your strengths lie in more areas than plain product development. You do know a lot about your specific domain of interest.

Don’t refrain from passing on that knowledge. Sharing is caring. It does take time from your other tasks but especially during an early stage, it can provide you with a great competitive advantage. Win-win!

So, how do you frame awesome support in your startup?
